Telč

Telč is situated at the south-west tip of Moravia, half-way between Prague and Vienna. According to legend the foundation of the city is associated with the victory of the Moravian Prince Otto II over the Bohemian King Břetislav in 1099. It was this victory that meant the building of a chapel, later to become a church, and a settlement which forms today’s Staré Město (Old Town). The city saw its greatest period of expansion under the rule of Zacharias of Hradec in the 2nd half of the 16th century. At the beginning of the 19th century Telč played an important role in the entire south-west region of Moravia, which was still growing with the arrival of the railway. Because the historical centre of the city, surrounded by fish ponds and city gates, has retained its unique shape over the centuries, in 1992 it was inscribed in the UNESCO List, which brought with it increased interest and a subsequent influx of tourists from around the world.

University Centre Telč (UCT)

UC Telc

Symposium will take place in the University Centre Telč (UCT).

The UCT resides in a complex formerly occupied by the Jesuit College in Telč. The foundation stone of the college building was laid in 1651 and construction of the three-wing two-storey edifice, positioned around an irregular courtyard, was finalized by 1655. The monumental structure stands out among the surrounding buildings both in terms of size and its simple, even austere appearance. A pharmacy was added in 1657 and a printer’s shop several years later. Following the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773, the building was handed over to the state and – four years later – to the army, who used the site as barracks. A girls’ burgher school was established on the premises in 1883 and subsequently replaced by a vocational secondary school in the second half of the 20th century. The complex was acquired by Masaryk University in 2002.

The centre presents Masaryk University faculties’ studies and learning opportunities in the region offering the degree and learning programmes within lifelong learning answering the learning demand of the region by hosting seminars, conferences or summer learning courses.

Centre of Telč (CET)

Telc

CET - Centre of Telč is a part of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Czech Academy of Science, which was build with financial support from the European Union and the Czech Republic through the structural funds and the state budget allocated to the Operational Programme Research and Development for the period 2007 – 2013.

The centre studies materials, structures, buildings and sites, especially historic ones, and is equipped with unique infrastructure for basic research as well as for testing the application and innovation potential of newly developed technologies for diagnostics, extension of durability, preventive protection and rescue and long-term sustainable use of cultural heritage as well as the present built fund.

CET’s infrastructure primarily comprises the climatic wind tunnel “Vincenc Strouhal” of ecologically and economically optimized size for the research of building materials and technologies and equipped with measurement and simulation tools developed at the Institute, a unique workplace for large-scale, high-resolution X-ray micro- and nanotomography, as well as material analyses laboratories and other research modules, specific databases and tools for research and monitoring of architectural heritage, including a unique mobile system for specific tasks of cultural heritage rescue in emergency situations.

CET is founded on and further develops research activities supported by the European Commission within the ARCCHIP Centre of Excellence.
